Buttface or Mild Hope: The Jets and Their Sanchez vs. McElroy Decision

sancheztebowmcelroy

We are essentially from marking a new era in Jets history.  Whether or not Greg McElroy gets the ball for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, we have probably seen the end of Mark Sanchez as "The Sanchize".  Mark Sanchez's ineffectiveness for most of the 2012 season has sealed his fate as it exists.

The major question at this point is, who will Rex Ryan choose?

Greg McElroy: 1-0 as Jets QB

McElroyWins

Who knows where we'll go from here, but for now, the Jets have benched Mark Sanchez and made the long-awaited move to Tim Tebow Greg McElroy.  McElroy came in for the ineffective Sanchez and led the game winning touchdown drive, throwing his first career TD to backup tight end Jeff Cumberland.

Jets vs. Cardinals 12-2-12: Preview of Before

Jets take on the Cardinals today, who they have had a lot of success against in recent years.

Possibly the most famous game between these two was the game that took place in 2008, when Packers great, Brett Favre, was in mid-season form against the Cardinals.  He would  throw a Jets record, 6 touchdown passes, over the course of the day.

Check out this high quality video of all those TDs:

The Vicious Circle of Success and Destruction: A History of the Florida and Miami Marlins – Part 2

Phase V: Regrowth Through Youth and Pitching

With their moves, the new Marlins of 1998 had only a $15 million total salary payroll.  This was a staggering change from the $52 million of the year prior - leaving only 29% of the cost remaining.  Livan Hernandez and Preston Wilson would make up some of the very few good pieces this team had left.  All in all, the Marlins would become the first  (and only in history to this point) team to lose 100 games in a defense of a World Series Championship.

1999 would be a year of change for the Marlins, though not necessarily in a positive moving direction.  Wayne Huizenga finally sold the team; to Boca Raton native, John Henry.  They also struck big in the draft, selecting future World Series MVP, Josh Beckett, with the first overall pick.

A Dangerous Precedent: The Niners and Benching Alex Smith

49ers QB Alex Smith was carrying the 3rd best Quarterback Rating in the NFL going into their game with the St. Louis Rams on November 11.  In that game, he was concussed from a hit resulting in him missing the remainder of the game and the following matchup with one of the league's top defenses, the Chicago Bears, on Monday Night Football.

In his stead came Colin Kaepernick, the potential-laden 2nd year player from Nevada.  Blessed with a rocket for an arm and the ability to run anywhere on the field, many in San Francisco were excited to see him play.

After going for 117 yards passing and 66 rushing with a touchdown, Kaepernick followed that up with a shocking 243 yards and 2 TD efficient and strong performance vs. the Bears.  Following the game, it became obvious with coach Jim Harbaugh's press conference that the "hot hand" was going to remain the starter.

The Game Where Mark Sanchez Runs Into Brandon Moore’s Ass and Fumbles

Random Jets Fan: "If they beat the Patriots tonight, maybe we can make it to the playoffs"

Random Jets Fan: "Don't ever allow me to speak again."

What Must Happen for the Jets to Have a Happy Thanksgiving?

1. Tom Brady Must Throw Interceptions
The turnover game will be a key to winning.  Over the past 2 games, Muhammad Wilkerson has been on fire with two forced fumbles, a sack, and a fumble recovery touchdown.  Getting pressure on Brady and making him make mistakes will allow the Jets give the offense easier opportunities to score.

The Vicious Circle of Success and Destruction: A History of the Florida and Miami Marlins – Part 1

Every year of my childhood, I spent two weeks in Florida each year with my grandparents.  For whatever reason, I began to have a kinship with the new sports teams that would appear in the South Florida market over those years - specifically the Panthers and Marlins.  While relevant for a few years, the Panthers have lived a fairly mediocre and uneventful existence since 1996.

The Marlins, on the other hand, have been full of success, controversy, and reinvention.  Just this week, once again, Miami was full of change when a mega-deal between the Marlins and Blue Jays commenced sending every Marlin making money to Toronto - including Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Josh Johnson - in return for cheap prospects.

While my following of the team has fallen to being inconsequential over the years, they have always been very intriguing to look into.  They are coming up on their 20th anniversary in 2013, so it is as good of a time as any to look back at the eventful history of the Marlins:

Save the Sanchize: Why the Rams Game Could Be The Most Important Game of Mark Sanchez’s Career

Mark Sanchez has played in a ton of big games so far in his career.  In the first two years, he did very well in them, including big wins he played well in during the playoffs that he still does not get enough credit for.

Last year, we saw a bit of a regression out of Sanchez in the clutch, as well as fewer big games for him to play.

Now we are at a possible turning point in the Jets-Sanchez relationship.  For all intents and purposes, the season will probably be over if they cannot defeat the Rams this Sunday.  It will definitely be over if they cannot come back 4 days later and beat the Patriots on Thanksgiving, but without winning the Rams game, the former is probably unwinnable.

Vice President Joe Biden’s 1993 Cameo on “Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?”

From time to time, I will write about non-sports subjects, and this seemed quite fitting for my first one.  This clip comes from the early 90's gameshow, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?", one of my favorites as a child.  Here Joe Biden, then a Senator from Delaware, shoots the breeze with the host of the show.

Previously, on the Jets Traveling To Seattle….

Last time the Jets traveled to Seattle to face the Seahawks, it was a different team with Brett Favre at the helm.  It was a loss, which ultimately helped keep the ball rolling for a Jets collapse and them missing the playoffs in Favre's only season in NY.

But the ball most remember from this game is the large snowball DE Shaun Ellis threw at a fan in the crowd.  Here is that video:

The Many Faces of Eli Manning

ESPN and Grantland's Bill Simmons once termed the phrase "Manning Face", a term of non-endearment towards the Colts' long time QB.  As Malcolm Gladwell once coined its meaning:
"The look of someone who has just faced up to a sobering fact: I am in complete control of this offense. I prepare for games like no other quarterback in the NFL. I am in the best shape of my life. I have done everything I can to succeed—and I'm losing.

In the years since then, Peyton's brother, Eli, has entered the same elite level of play Gladwell describes, and with it, has developed some of the same faces his brother has.

So in dedication to his latest one, here are the top five Eli Manning Faces on Record:

It's possible...

[It's not]

...that the Knicks...

[I mean, they're the Knicks, so we must consider we are all being set up]

...did this right?

[See, not even the most positive can be sure].

Well...lets assess this from all sides.

Week 7 Notes: A Newly Discovered Way The Jets Were Screwed Sunday [and more!]

[1] A few different issues with the game process have been called out since Sunday that could have affected the result of the Jets-Patriots game.  First there was the thought that Bill Belicheck had illegally thrown his challenge flag on the Aaron Hernandez goal line fumble.  That was determined to be false, despite cheers from the crowd indicating he had thrown it.

Second was the questionable actions of the New England timekeeper.  Barely any time was eclipsed from the start of Devin McCourty's kick return to the moment he fumbled; the clock was conveniently stopped at 2:01, allowing the Patriots to have a mandatory timeout on their side.  Again, the NFL came to the Patriots' defense and ruled that everything was kosher.

Now yesterday, Grantland's Bill Barnwell brings up the fact that on the game's concluding play, Pats' lineman Jermaine Cunningham fell at the line of scrimmage, then crawled towards Mark Sanchez and was "diving at his ankles...knocking him down."

Quick Keys to the Jets-Patriots Game: 10/21/12

1. Can the Jets stop the Oregon Offense?
Much has been made about the new offense Bill Belicheck has installed in New England this year.  It has led to the Patriots having by far the most offensive attempts in 2012 and has helped them keep defenses on their toes.

At the same time, this is a team that is an uncharacteristic 3-3.  Is this offense wearing down in games because of this technique?  Is this hurting Tom Brady, who had two intentional grounding penalties last week against the Seahawks?

Jets will be without some key players on defense like starting DT Sione Po'uha, backup DT Kendrick Ellis, and SS Eric Smith.  Those losses could be painful when substituting is such an important factor in this game.

Live From the Meadowlands: It’s Monday Night!

I was in attendance for Jets-Texans yesterday and got to watch the almost-destruction, almost-miracle, almost-Sanchez-led-comeback, definite-killer-interception in person.  Here are a sprinkling of thoughts both on the live experience and on the game itself.

1. First Texans fans sighting

I have seen 3 Texans games so far and this one was the first where there were a noticeable amount of Texans fans there.  They were not nearly as overwhelming as the 49ers fans from the week before, but there were some nice pockets of fans around.  I guess finally fielding a playoff team and being a decade in has allowed this team to gain some out-of-state fans.

2. This guy made a great shirt

Luckily, we only have to stop at step 1 of that shirt.

AL Cy Young Race Is Closed: Fernando Rodney Should Win

This time of year, starting pitchers get all the looks for the Cy Young award and why not, they pitch the most innings and have the longest effect on games of anyone during the game.

There have been several relief pitchers that have won the Cy Young, but like starting pitchers and the MVP, it is few and far between.  But every so often, there comes a reliever that should get the attention of the media and their league.

This year, we have one in the American League that should be under major consideration: the Tampa Bay Ray's closer, Fernando Rodney.

How Can The Jets Win Now?

In consecutive weeks, the Jets have lost their two biggest playmakers: Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes.

While the NFL has proven that you can rally from a star player becoming injured, a second star going down on such a flawed team leads most to believe that this will not be happening for the Jets.

If we can all agree that the Jets will not be winning the Super Bowl this year, the best course of action for the Jets is to lose out and get as best of a draft pick as possible in the 2013 draft (hopefully with someone other than Tannenbaum making that pick).  With that said, if the Jets are going to win more games this year, here are some Tebow-less ways they will have to adjust to make it possible.

Now That the Refs Are Back, How Can We Blame The Packers For Losing To The Seahawks?

[Warning: Tweets posted contain explicit language]

https://twitter.com/TCrabtree83/status/250445934952075264

As of Wednesday, the full-time referees have been returned to the NFL and the replacements sent off to the ether for eternity. We had a regularly scheduled matchup between the Ravens and Browns go off without a hitch.

So this is as good of time as any to run down reasons 4 to 2 as to why the Packers actually lost Monday Night.
